Green Level, Month 1: Black Geniuses
Overview
Thank you for subscribing to the Sankofa Club's Digital Activities Box.
Welcome to Month 1 of the Green Level Membership designed for Grade 3 up until Grade 5.
We believe everyone deserves to be proud of the people, history, and culture they come from, but understand this won't happen unless we, you and I, step up to make it happen. Our aim is to provide you with the tools, activities, and insights to help make our young people know, love and respect their ancestors, their achievements and ultimately their place in this world.
This Month's Focus
This month we are focusing on a few extremely important geniuses throughout time. Those included in this edition are ancient Egyptian, Imhotep, the true father of medicine, the Dogon Tribe of the central plateau region of Mali, in West Africa, female inventor Marie Van Brittan Brown, and chess Grandmaster Maurice Ashley.
It is essential that our children know that their ancestors have been at the height of achievement through the ages and what better place to start than in Ancient Egyptian times with Imhotep, the real father of medicine, but he was also much more than that. The Dogons are still here with us today and pass down their ancient knowledge of the stars that pre-dated modern discoveries (only made with modern telescopes and equipment of which the Dogons have none, which begs the question, how do they know these things).
Marie Van Brittan Brown is an amazing inventor who pushed the boundaries of technology and represents a true problem solver and genius. Finally, we close with Maurice Ashley, truly one of the best Chess players the planet has ever known.
